ABSTRACT
The geography of development of toponymic units of Azerbaijan is extremely wide, and the methods of creation are also diverse. This created a classification system of toponym formation methods. Despite the expansion of research on toponyms, the scientific-theoretical principles of toponymics are not followed. It is in this direction that most of the researches have characteristic features. It should be noted that there are some methodological flaws in the classification of studies. In general, due to the systematic approach to toponyms, during its study, some important issues were either left out of the research process or completely forgotten.
