ABSTRACT

The vocabulary of the Azerbaijani language is constantly evolving. The lexical meanings, spelling, and pronunciation of newly introduced words and expressions remain a matter of ongoing relevance. When reviewing primary school textbooks, it becomes evident that new words and expressions are included under rubrics such as “Word Basket”, “Things We Should Know”, and others. However, certain shortcomings should not be overlooked. In order to develop students' oral and written speech, orthography and orthoepy should be taught in an integrated manner. This integration should cover I–XI grades, and teachers, by employing effective strategies, can influence the development of students’ speech. To achieve this, teachers must be familiar with the latest orthographic and orthoepic norms, as even a minor mistake can negatively impact students’ language skills. Therefore, it is essential to strictly adhere to the established norms. Currently, information regarding pronunciation in textbooks is not satisfactory. In this regard, greater responsibility falls on primary school teachers. Teachers should rely on individually prepared materials, organize engaging word games, vocabulary activities, and different types of writing tasks, and constantly encourage students to explore and investigate. At the same time, they should support the students’ development as young researchers. Today, everyone eagerly awaits the preparation and release of a new orthoepy dictionary based on the latest rules. We hope that this dictionary will soon be published and that the number of its users will steadily increase.
